iDEAL and own-bank payments
Payment options for Dutch webshops: iDEAL, own-bank transfer, cards and what each one costs you in fees and in order handling.
The methods your customers expect
The Dutch baseline
- iDEAL, by a wide margin the default for consumer payments
- Cards, for cross-border and higher-value orders
- Own-bank transfer, for business customers who want the reference on their statement
- Pay later and instalments, for higher-value baskets
- Direct debit, for recurring and donation flows
What each actually costs
The transaction fee is the visible cost and rarely the largest one. The hidden costs are reconciliation effort, manual handling of orders that sit pending, and the support load from customers whose payment did not complete cleanly. A cheaper provider that leaves orders in an ambiguous state is often the more expensive choice.
Own-bank transfer specifically
Business customers often prefer it because it lands on their statement with a reference their bookkeeping already understands. The cost is that settlement is slow and the order sits unfulfilled, which only works if your process and your messaging handle waiting well.
Implementation
See WordPress webshop with iDEAL for the integration detail, and recurring payments if you need repeat billing.
