Banner widget for products and content
In-content promotion works when it is useful and fails when it is loud. The mechanics are simple; the restraint is not.
What the widget is for
A banner widget places a targeted promotion inside article content: a workshop, a product, a downloadable guide. Done well it answers the question the reader is already asking. Done badly it interrupts the sentence they were reading.
Rules that keep it useful
Practical constraints
- One promotion per article; repetition reads as advertising
- Match the promotion to the article's subject, not the campaign calendar
- Place after the reader has received value, not before
- Never push the content below the fold on mobile
- Measure click-through and bounce together; a high click rate with a high bounce rate means the promise did not match the destination
Implementation notes
Render server-side where possible so the promotion is part of the page rather than a layout shift. Keep the widget's markup semantic and its styling scoped, and make it easy to retire: promotions that outlive their campaign become the reason readers stop trusting your content.
